Cecilia Blythe is a scribe and illuminator of House Corvus — one of the artists who turns a kingdom's awards into objects of lasting beauty. Where heralds proclaim honours in court, scribes like Cecilia make the scrolls that record them forever.

Persona Background

Cecilia's persona is rooted in the world of the late-medieval workshop, where books and documents were lettered and painted by hand. Her study centres on the two joined arts of the scribe: calligraphy, the writing of period letterforms with quill and ink, and illumination, the decoration of the page with paint and gold leaf.

The Scribal Arts

Medieval scribes worked in a succession of beautiful hands — uncial, Carolingian minuscule, Gothic textura, the humanist hands of the Renaissance — each suited to its age. A modern scribe learns to read and reproduce these scripts, cutting their own quills and sometimes grinding their own pigments. Illumination adds the colour and the gold: the decorated initials, borders of vine and flower, and small painted scenes that make a manuscript glow.

The great surviving manuscripts that scribes study — books of hours, psalters, and chronicles — are increasingly digitised and free to examine in detail, notably through the British Library's illuminated manuscripts catalogue.

Scrolls for the Kingdom

Much of Cecilia's work in the Society is practical and generous: when the crown gives an award, a scribe creates the scroll that the recipient carries home. These are made to order, often tailored to the recipient's persona and arms, and presented in court. It is one of the purest expressions of the Society's gift culture — an artist spends many hours so that another member's proudest moment becomes a treasure they can keep. Cecilia has been recognised for this service; her own honours are read in the kingdom's courts.
