Lady Cassandra

Lady Cassandra brings the gentle, painstaking arts to House Corvus: the needle, the loom, and the herb garden. Her work reminds the household that the Middle Ages were built as much by skilled hands at home as by knights upon the field.
Persona Background
Cassandra's persona is that of a woman of a noble household in high-medieval Europe, responsible — as such women genuinely were — for the textiles, the still-room, and the health of the household. It is a persona that opens onto two of the richest fields of medieval study: the textile arts and the practice of herbal medicine.
Needlework & Textile Arts
Cassandra studies the embroidery, weaving, and tailoring of the medieval world. Surviving textiles — from the great embroidered hangings to the humble woven band — tell us an extraordinary amount about how people dressed, decorated their homes, and signalled their status. Recreating these techniques by hand is slow work that rewards patience: the same satisfaction a medieval needleworker would have known.
Much of what we know about medieval dress and textiles comes from surviving garments and from the detailed clothing shown in manuscript paintings, many now freely viewable through the Metropolitan Museum of Art and similar collections.
The Herb Garden & Still-Room
Cassandra also keeps the lore of the medieval herbalist. Long before modern pharmacy, the household still-room was where remedies, cordials, and preserves were made from garden herbs. Studying period herbals — illustrated books of plants and their uses — is a window into how medieval people understood the natural world. (In keeping with the educational spirit of the Society, this study is historical: we recreate the recipes and the lore, not their medical claims.)
