The Crown Hotel
Wetheral, Carlisle, England

[Monday - 05/03/99] We arrived in Wetheral, just south east of Carlisle, in time for an excellent supper at our new hotel, The Crown. The Crown didn't exactly fit our ideal criterion for accommodations as it was not a pre-1600 structure. However, it's location made it ideal for our Cumbrian explorations.

Originally built as a farm house in the 18th century, the front of the hotel maintains its period charm. Attached to the back, however, is a more modern spanse of rooms more typical of modern hotels. They had a very congenial staff and they actually let me look in every room of the "old" hotel. However, we opted for the more spacious rooms and settled in easily. The conservatory has been refurbished into a spectacular restaurant which overlooks beautifully tended gardens in which some of us walked and relaxed in each evening. We all agreed that the food was the best of the entire tour.
